I was surprised that there was no place to put medium sized luggage as the top rail compartments only fits smaller pieces. The air conditioning also did not work well so I was uncomfortable for most of the 6-7 hour train ride. Views from windows that are not open are not good. Train not smooth as it was extremely old and slow. I don't think it was worth paying extra for first class. Perhaps second class is better since at least you can keep windows open and get a breeze!

The train tickets were delivered correctly and on time to our hotel. The trip from Ella to Kandy was truley awesome. Tips for users-Right hand side to Nuwara-Ellya then left hand side to Kandy for the best views. Traveling in the clockwise direction seems less crowded. Actual seat alacation is a bit of a lucky dip as some seats are either obscured by pillars or front or rear seats with cramped views.It can get cool with the windows open so dress to conditions. Snacks and drinks are good and come around often. Doors in 2nd sometimes open sometimes not, not sure why.
Train staff friendly and helpful. Up there with the best trips in the world, fair dinkum.
Ps; Perhaps Sri Lanka Railways could swap locals some free tickets for a spot of cleaning?

Fabulous trip. A step back in time. Classic carriage, beautiful ride through the tea plantations. Little rocky at times, but just added to the atmosphere. Highly recommend.

The Viceroy II wagon had comfortable chairs, and we were given two cups of coffe/tee each during the ride. The amazing view of beautiful green tea plantations, hill landscape and small Sri Lankan villages really makes the trip memorable. The Viceroy II tickets were more expensive than other alternatives, but worth the money if you ask me. 4 out og 5 stars because the AC actually made the journey a bit cold ???? But both my partner and I would absolutely recommend a trip!!

Seats were very comfortable. There was conflicting information about whether or not good would be served. In the end they did offer food but charged extra. Great staff, great coffee. The train was on time.

This train ride was incredible! I wasn't sure what to expect and was very pleasantly surprised! The train was comfortable and the staff were lovely; provided tea and coffee and refreshments were available for purchase. The car was equiped with wifi and was very comfortable. The trip itself was stunning and the countryside was absolutely beautiful. This is a must-do in Sri Lanka!

It's a beautiful view throughout. The train quality and ride are endearing at first but become tiresome looking and uncomfortable.
I wouldn't book it again.

Very nice ride through the mountains. At times a bit wobbly, but the views are breathtaking....

Really pleasant travel experience. We took a first class train Kandy to Colombo and this was 100x better. Large comfy seats, old school class. The carriage is old and you can tell but it’s function is not impacted. The train is of course super slow and at times very wobbly, but that’s how you can enjoy the breathtaking views
